Arctic Monkeys – Camden Roundhouse 09/09//2013

It is the day of release for Arctic Monkeys fifth LP ‘AM’ and is already on course to be their fifth consecutive number one in the UK charts. How do they choose to celebrate this? They headline the iTunes Festival at the small capacity Roundhouse venue in Camden which can only be attended by competition winners.

Rock ‘n roll.

Luckily, I was able to be in the crowd for this gig , and was a hell of a lot closer to Alex Turner and co than when I attended the Glastonbury festival a couple months back.

It begins with the hugely catchy and sleak Do I Wanna Know? which sets up the new sound for the ‘AM’ LP so perfectly. The band come out the frequency lines seen on the front of the album. Mr Turner still claims to be the King of Cool as he saunters on with his sunglasses, big collared open shirt and slick Elvis-style hair. He has become a frontman.

They blast through a set list consisting of around 6 songs off the new LP and most of the hits, such as Teddy Picker, Crying Lightning and of course I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor. And despite what the papers say, the crowd were loving it.

Alex is still donning his best Elvis impersonation as he proclaims to the crowd to move their hips as they wave their arms cause ‘although I can’t see it, I can feel it’. He is way more comfortable as a frontman on stage now than he has ever been in his career.

In terms of staging we have a very minimal set, consisting of a couple screens at the back. But honestly, they deliver what the crowd need without any elaborate staging, good old fashioned rock ‘n roll.

The songs from the new album play out well (the album was up for streaming during the week due to a leak) but it’s the old songs which please the crowd the most.

Overall, it was a great gig. The band brought good music, good style and good crowd interaction which is remarkable considering it being a free gig where bands usually just try to plug something new. But the Monkeys play for their fans, and with Miles Kane coming out for the 505 encore, it is certainly a Monkeys gig to remember.
